영어 문법 10편: 비교급과 최상급, 둘 이상을 견줘서 말하기

"내 가방이 네 가방보다 더 커", "우리 반에서 가장 빨라". 사람이나 물건을 서로 견줄 때 쓰는 표현이 비교급과 최상급이에요. 형용사와 부사의 모양을 바꿔서 만들어요.

1. 세 가지 형태: 원급, 비교급, 최상급

비교급	둘을 비교 (더 ~한)	Tom is taller than Jane. (톰은 제인보다 키가 더 크다.)
최상급	셋 이상 중 가장 (가장 ~한)	Tom is the tallest in my class. (톰은 우리 반에서 키가 가장 크다.)

2. 비교급·최상급 만드는 규칙

① 짧은 단어 (1음절): -er / -est

대부분 + -er / -est	tall	taller	tallest
-e로 끝나면 + -r / -st	nice	nicer	nicest
자음 + y → y를 i로 바꾸고 + -er / -est	easy	easier	easiest
짧은 모음 + 자음 → 자음 한 번 더	big	bigger	biggest

② 긴 단어 (3음절 이상 또는 일부 2음절): more / most

• ❌ more tall, beautifuler → ✅ taller, more beautiful
• 부사 중 -ly로 끝나는 단어도 more / most를 써요: slowly → more slowly → most slowly

③ 불규칙 변화 (외워야 해요!)

3. 비교급 문장: A + 동사 + 비교급 + than + B

• This bag is bigger than that one. (이 가방이 저것보다 더 크다.)
• English is more difficult than math for me. (나에게 영어는 수학보다 더 어렵다.)
• She runs faster than me. (그녀는 나보다 더 빨리 달린다.)

비교급 강조: much, even, still, far, a lot

• This book is much better than that one. (이 책이 저것보다 훨씬 더 좋다.)
• ❌ very better → ✅ much better (very는 비교급 앞에 쓰지 않아요!)

비교급 and 비교급: 점점 더 ~한

• It is getting colder and colder. (점점 더 추워지고 있다.)
• The story became more and more interesting. (이야기가 점점 더 흥미로워졌다.)

the + 비교급, the + 비교급: ~할수록 더 ~하다

• The more you study, the better your grades will be. (공부를 많이 할수록 성적이 더 좋아질 것이다.)

4. 최상급 문장: the + 최상급 + in/of ~

• She is the tallest girl in my class. (그녀는 우리 반에서 가장 키가 큰 여학생이다.)
• This is the most expensive watch of all. (이것은 모든 시계 중에서 가장 비싸다.)

in vs of

• in + 장소·집단 (단수): in my class, in the world, in Korea
• of + 복수 명사 / 숫자: of the three, of all, of the students

최상급 앞에는 the를 붙여요!

• ❌ He is tallest boy. → ✅ He is the tallest boy.
• 단, 부사의 최상급은 the를 생략하기도 해요. (He runs (the) fastest.)

one of the + 최상급 + 복수명사: 가장 ~한 것들 중 하나

• Seoul is one of the biggest cities in the world. (서울은 세계에서 가장 큰 도시들 중 하나이다.)
• one of the 뒤에는 복수 명사가 와요!

5. 원급 비교: as + 원급 + as

같을 때: as ~ as (~만큼 …한)

• She is as tall as her brother. (그녀는 오빠만큼 키가 크다.)

같지 않을 때: not as(so) ~ as (~만큼 …하지 않은)

• This bag is not as heavy as that one. (이 가방은 저것만큼 무겁지 않다.)
• 이 가방이 더 가볍다는 뜻이에요. = That bag is heavier than this one.

배수 표현

• This box is twice as big as that one. (이 상자는 저것보다 두 배 크다.)

6. 자주 하는 실수

• ❌ She is more taller than me. → ✅ She is taller than me. (-er과 more를 함께 쓰지 않아요)
• ❌ This is the most best book. → ✅ This is the best book.
• ❌ He is taller that me. → ✅ He is taller than me.
• ❌ This book is very better. → ✅ This book is much better.
• ❌ Seoul is one of the biggest city. → ✅ Seoul is one of the biggest cities.
• ❌ He is the tallest of my class. → ✅ He is the tallest in my class.
